Do you need to rehome your chinchilla?

Subject to availability, I try to take in chinchillas that are in urgent need of a new home. I do this free of charge, which means I do not buy any animals. I help with transport as best as I can, and also suggest that you can look for transport help yourself, for example in the Djurtransporthjälpen group on Facebook.

Information I need from you

I naturally prefer that you are as honest as possible and tell me about the chinchilla's background. This is not about judging you, but about enabling me to give the chinchilla the right care and find the right new home. Please tell me:

• Why you need to rehome the chinchilla
• How the chinchilla has lived with you and how long you have owned it
• All conceivable information about the chinchilla's origin (breeder, pet store, previous home)
• If the chinchilla has moved around a lot between different homes
• If the chinchilla is shy, aggressive, or might have dental problems
• If the chinchilla needs to live alone

If I don't have the space myself but want to help find a home with someone else, does the new recipient need the same information?.

If I take back a chinchilla I previously sold

Subject to availability, I will also take back the chinchillas I have previously sold if the need arises. The same rule applies here – I am not buying back any animals, whether you have owned the animal for a month or a year.

The reason is simple: it costs me time, space, and money to receive or take back chinchillas. Nor can I sell my own bred animals at normal price after they have come back, but instead a rehoming fee applies – since I cannot guarantee how the animal has been cared for while living elsewhere.

It is also my personal opinion that if you are truly in need of finding a new home for your pets, regardless of the reason, it should not be the breeder who pays for it – just to show that you are serious and have thought through your decision.

I have also consciously chosen not to charge any fee to accept rehomings. The purpose is to reduce the number of chinchillas that are otherwise forced to move around between several different homes, so-called ”rolling trophies” – it takes a tremendous toll on a chinchilla to constantly change homes and owners. The majority of the animals I take in actually stay here for the rest of their lives.

That is how things are done here

1. The chinchilla is getting a fungal treatment (bathing sand with sulfur powder and Pevaryl)
2. I am performing an external health check to detect signs of injury or illness that require veterinary care. The chinchilla is weighed and placed on a simple hay diet for the first few days (exceptions are made if the chinchilla is underweight)
3. The chinchilla is placed in quarantine and kept under observation for the first few weeks
4. If the chinchilla lacks a known background, pedigree, or other papers, it is registered as a PET in the CAS association and receives a registration certificate where sex, color, approximate age, and other information are listed (previous owners are not listed).
5. If the chinchilla is assessed to be in good condition, it can be taken to an exhibition for further evaluation.
6. The chinchilla can stay here for as long as it needs. If I judge that it would do better in a companion home, it will be rehomed.

Buying a rescue pet from me

Requirements for adopting a rehomed pet

The purchase agreement must be signed by an adult

You are over 18 years old

You should have previous experience taking care of rescues, and be well-informed about behavior, diseases, and ailments.

You must be prepared to keep the chinchilla for the rest of its life. Otherwise, the chinchilla must be returned here, unless otherwise agreed between you and me (a clear plan must be in place)

The chinchilla must not be bred.
